The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden (RSBG) invites you to our next webinar on February 20, 2025, at 6 p.m. PST with a special guest speaker. Amami, in the Ryukyu Islands, is one of four islands that make up Japan’s latest UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to the United Nations agency, the site contains the richest biota in Japan, one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.
Join Horticulturist and Educator at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Douglas Justice, as he discusses how he was part of an international team of Acer researchers who visited the island in March 2024. There, they undertook the first comprehensive population survey of Acer amamiense, an endemic species and the world’s rarest maple.
Price: $15 for RSBG members | $25 for non-members
Registration closes on February 18, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. PST.

Douglas Justice oversees and instructs in UBC Botanical Garden’s Horticulture Training Program, teaches in Landscape Architecture at UBC and has been curating the living collections and managing horticulture at the Botanical Garden and Nitobe Memorial Garden in Vancouver since 2000. A self-described plant fanatic—an inheritance from his equally-plant-obsessed father—Douglas sees the beauty in all kinds of plants. He plans on returning to Japan for more maple research and is working to complete a treatise on the woody garden flora of Vancouver.
