WEBINAR: An Introduction to Plant Collection Curation (and a bit of basic taxonomy) at the RSBG with Executive Director and Curator Steve Hootman

Join Steve Hootman to learn about plant collection curation, specifically the curation methods used at the RSBG. Steve will discuss the design and use of the plant database at the RSBG, including the how’s and why’s of accessioning plants and seed. Steve will also discuss the taxonomy of Rhododendron and provide a lesson on the use of a dichotomous key to determine the proper identification of plant species.

Cost:
       $20 for non-Members and $10 for Members

About Steve Hootman:

Steve Hootman is the Executive Director & Curator of the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way, Washington. Mr. Hootman is responsible for the integrity and management of the Rhododendron Species Foundation’s world class collection of species and has participated in numerous plant hunting expeditions into China and the Himalayas which have produced a surprising number of new introductions.

How to Join the Meeting:

  • When you register for the event, you will receive a confirmation email.
  • Closer to the date of the lecture, you will receive an email from RSBG staff with a link to the scheduled lecture and further instruction.
  • Please note that you do not need a Zoom account to attend the lecture. However, you will be required to download Zoom software on your device. There are two ways to do this:
    Visit Zoom.us and find the “RESOURCES” drop down menu at the very top of the webpage. Hover your mouse over the arrow next to “RESOURCES” and select “Download Zoom Client” from the drop down menu. On this page, select the first download button labeled “Zoom Client for Meetings.”

  • Click on the lecture link, which will be sent to you via email. The link will prompt you to download the software.
  • You do not need a webcam or a microphone to participate, however, you will need a device with speakers to hear the lecture.
  • All Zoom registrants will be muted during the lecture. We will take questions via text and answer them in a Q&A session at the end of the talk.

If you are unable to join us at the scheduled time of the talk, no worries! This lecture will be recorded and available for viewing at a future date*.
