A Zoom Talk by Kyra Matin….
Seed Collecting on the South Island of New Zealand
In this immersive presentation, explore the unique flora of the South Island of New Zealand, where the RSBG’s Assistant Horticulturist Kyra Matin studied local flora and ecology. As part of the University of Washington’s Master of Environmental Horticulture program, Matin spent four months working at Dunedin Botanic Garden and collecting wild, native seed. The collected seeds were brought back to Washington and added to the collection of the Pacific Connections Garden, which features plants from five Pacific Rim regions with similar climates – China, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, and Cascadia. The talk includes photos of the plant-rich hinterlands and even a few photos of the celebrated Rhododendron Dell at the Dunedin Botanic Garden.

About Kyra Matin – Kyra is a recent addition, having joined the Rhody Garden staff in November of 2020. She works in the nursery on propagation and production, as well as in the garden helping to maintain our world class collection of species Rhododendrons and companion plants. Prior to joining the Rhody Garden team, Kyra worked as the Program Manager for the Hardy Fern Foundation. Other horticultural achievements include managing the Chilean collection in the Pacific Connections Garden at the University of Washington Botanic Gardens, as well as working at Cistus Nursery in Oregon. She obtained a Master of Environmental Horticulture from the University of Washington and has an undergraduate degree in Biology from Lewis & Clark College. She has a strong interest in plant conservation, floristics and ecogeographic gardens, and plant evolution. She has participated in multiple seed collecting excursions, including a solo trip to New Zealand, and is inspired by the plant hunting spirit that lives on at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden.
