Fall brillianceWhat to see in the Garden now

There’s always

something interesting to enjoy

in the Garden.

“Where the wild things grow” is the tag line for the RSBG because we are all about the wild i.e. species rhododendrons. Tropical and subtropical rhododendrons and companion plants thrive and bloom throughout the year in the Rutherford Conservatory.

Fall is a beautiful time of year to visit the Garden. From the towering colorful Amelanchier (Serviceberry), Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Katsura), and Acer (Maple) trees to the myriad of Azaleas, brilliant color rocks the Garden in the autumn. The color isn’t just in the foliage, there are blooms to enjoy as well.
The tropical rhododendrons (Vireya) in the 5,000 square foot Rutherford Conservatory put on a colorful fall display.

Here is a sampling of fall foliage to enjoy:

Acer griseum, Paperbark Maple – scarlet, plus decorative exfoliating bark
Acer palmatum ‘Emerald Lace’ – yellow to orange, finishing with fiery red
Acer palmatum ‘Red Pygmy’ – yellow
Acer sieboldianum – brilliant scarlet
Ferns in the Hardy Fern Foundation’s Victorian Stumpery – various
Fothergilla major – cherry-red, orange or bright yellow
Cercidiphyllum japonicum, Katsura Tree – yellow, notice the cotton candy scent that’s given off by its fallen leaves
Polygonum vacciniifolium – bright red
Stewartia pseudocamellia (Japanese Stewartia) – yellow, red, purple
Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum (Doublefile Viburnum) – stunning reddish-bronze fall color
