“From Seed to Selection – Favorite Newly Introduced Japanese Maples”

The introduction of new Japanese maples is a lengthy process involving a network of nursery-folk and propagators worldwide.  Arbutus Garden Arts nursery acts as a gateway for many of these cultivars in the Pacific Northwest; growing them over time in a range of conditions and comparing their characteristics to well-proven older varieties.  Naturally there is an element of personal taste involved, but an effort is made to be objective.  Cultivars which impress are grown out to size, and then passed on to larger propagating nurseries which will graft them in hundreds, while we remain small, and work with the next generation.

Come see this process, and many of the new introductions which have made the grade, and are now becoming available.

Norm owns Arbutus Garden Arts—where art and nature inspire. They are a small nursery and large display garden in SE Portland in western Oregon. The nursery specializes in noteworthy (meaning notable for unique features and worth growing in your garden) Japanese Maples, dwarf conifers, and Epimedium. The nursery focuses on understory plants that thrive in woodland dry shade as well as cutting-edge and unusual varieties.
